Handicap Access on Kiawah Island

Updated for 2026
Kiawah Island can be a very comfortable destination for guests with mobility or walking limitations if you choose the right building and the right beach access point.
The key is simple:
Look for buildings with ramps and boardwalks with ramps.
With a bit of planning, step-free access is absolutely possible.
Accessible Vacation Rentals on Kiawah Island
Several oceanfront condominium buildings are well-suited for guests who prefer to avoid stairs. The most consistent accessibility is found in West Beach and East Beach, where select buildings offer ramped access from parking areas and elevator access to all floors.
Buildings with Ramps from Parking to the Building
Windswept
The oceanfront Windswept buildings offer ramp access in select locations.
- Windswept I (buildings 1–4): Ramp access available
- Windswept III (5100 building): Ramp access available
However, not every oceanfront Windswept building has consistent ramp access all the way to the parking lot. Accessibility can vary depending on the specific building and ongoing improvements.
- Boardwalk 22: Located between the Windswept highrise (5100 building) and Building 4 of Windswept I
- The Sea Wish: Located in Building 4, one of the closest villas to a reliable ramped beach access point
Accessibility improvements are ongoing, so ramp locations may vary slightly by building.
Shipwatch
Shipwatch offers ramps from the building to the parking areas, making it one of the more reliable options for guests with walking concerns.
Many villas within these buildings allow step-free entry once inside via elevators. However, some properties may still have stairs inside the unit, so it’s important to confirm layout details before booking.

Ramped Beach Access on Kiawah Island
This is where planning matters most.
Even if a building has a ramp, most beach boardwalks do not.
For example:
- Windswept buildings may have ramp access
- Their boardwalks typically have stairs only
To access the beach without stairs, you’ll want to use one of the designated ramped boardwalks below.
Reliable Ramped Beach Access Points
- Boardwalk 5 (Shipwatch area): Flat, smooth, and commonly used. One of the most dependable ramped access points.
- Boardwalk 18 (between Mariners Watch and Windswept): Convenient access to the sand with a ramp.
- Boardwalk 22 (between Windswept I Building 4 and the 5100 building): One of the most important access points on the island. Dedicated ramp to the beach, even though nearby boardwalks may not have ramps.
- Boardwalk 27 (Turtle Point Villas): Located on the west end of the island and offers another reliable ramped option.
Public Beach Access
Kiawah Beachwalker Park
Located on the west end of the island, this public beach offers wheelchair-accessible ramps and boardwalks.
Parking and amenity fees apply.
Additional Accessible Outdoor Areas
There is also ramped access to the river and marsh near the Kiawah River Bridge at the island entrance. This area is ideal for birdwatching, fishing, and enjoying scenic views without navigating sand.
Important Accessibility Note
Accessibility features such as ramps, elevators, and boardwalk access can change due to maintenance, weather, or ongoing island projects.
Some Windswept ramp locations are part of active improvements. Always confirm current conditions before arrival.
The Bottom Line
- Choose a building with ramp access
- Plan to use a boardwalk with a ramp
That one decision makes the entire stay dramatically easier.
